Compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve by a thymic tumor causes which symptom?

Hoarseness

Hoarseness arises because the recurrent laryngeal nerve, a branch of the vagus, innervates the intrinsic laryngeal muscles that move the vocal cords. When a thymic tumor compresses this nerve in the mediastinum, the vocal cord on the affected side can’t adduct properly, producing a hoarse, breathy voice. The left recurrent laryngeal nerve, with its longer intrathoracic course, is more prone to compression by mediastinal masses. Cough, shortness of breath, or dysphagia involve other structures or nerves and are not the typical presentation of recurrent laryngeal nerve compression.
